Hiragawara, Japanese Antique Ceramic Roof Tiles - Antique Kawara roof tiles are frequently reused within the Japanese garden. One example is to use flat tiles known as Hiragawara (平瓦) to accentuate the separation between gravel and green. The roof tiles are placed upright in the ground and protrude slightly above the gravel. Usually, simple rows are applied. However, interesting patterns can also be created by combining multiple rows.
These Hiragawara tiles as well as many other types such as the rounded ornamental ridge tiles called Marugawara (丸瓦) are also often put in the garden as decoration, especially if they are antique. This gives the illusion that there used to be an ancient piece of traditional architecture like a temple of shrine in that spot a long time ago. Repurposing old materials within the Japanese landscape is a perfect example of applying the aesthetical concept of Wabi-Sabi.
