Traditionally applying ornamental rocks, Niwaishi (庭石) in Japanese, forms the basis of practically every Japanese garden. The setting of stones is always the first step, after which the garden is formed together with all the other elements surrounding it.

The Sanzonseki arrangement is integrated in gardens all over Japan, sometimes featuring more small rocks around it.
Tora stone is a very unique Japanese stone kind. The primary characteristic is its surface featuring stripes. This makes it resemble the fur of a tiger, Tora in Japanese, which it was named after.
