The texts have a range of topics, for example the location that the stone is a part of. The primary function of Ishibumi is to transfer knowledge to future generations.
This very unique Ishibumi features beautiful carvings of multiple faces of Otafuku, a beacon of joy and good fortune. This is a famous character from traditional Japanese folklore, specifically from the iconic Kyogen theatre. The Japanese inscription reads Jūkuya Kuyō (十九夜供養), meaning: memorial offering for the Nineteenth Night. The stone is a Jūkuya-tō, a Buddhist votive monument associated with the traditional nineteenth-night moon-waiting observance. These gatherings were particularly popular among women, who prayed to Nyoirin Kannon for safe childbirth, the wellbeing of children, and salvation in the afterlife.
