This is where the name Tsuridōrō (釣り灯籠) comes from, which roughly translates to hanging lantern. There are multiple methods to fix the light inside the lantern. Think of a candle or oil lamp, but electricity is also a widely used option. The light shining from inside the lantern, and silhouettes it casts, results in a wonderful warm ambiance.
This particular Tsuridōrō has a special shape that resembles a mushroom. The name Kinoko (茸), the Japanese word for mushroom, was based on this.
