Kikkou Ishibashi, Japanese Stone Bridge - The garden bridge became one of the most significant parts of the traditional Japanese garden during the Heian period (794-1185). The philosophy behind the garden bridge is that it symbolizes the crossing between the mortal world and the afterlife. It allows one to rid oneself of worldly burdens and experience inner peace, purity and becoming one with nature.
This bridge is hand-made in a traditional Kikkou-seki style (亀甲石). This style is famous for the unique patterns of cracks seen on the surface of the stone. Kikkou is Japanese for turtle shell, which shares a strong resemblance with the appearance of the rock type.
