Tora-zō, Japanese Antique Tiger Statue
Item description - YO07010101
Tora-zō (トラ像) are traditional Japanese tiger statues. These statues are often used to ward off evil spirits from holy grounds, like for example at the Kurama-dera temple in Kyoto. The tiger has a strong cultural and philosophical background in Japan and plays a significant role in many stories and legends.
This Tora-zō statue is made of Japanese conglomerate stone called Tsubuteiwa stone (礫岩石). This material is quite grainy, which is the reason why the statue lost many details over the years. Something that perfectly fits the concept of Wabi-Sabi, appreciating the beauty of natures imperfections.
• Origin: Nagoya, Aichi prefecture, Japan
• Material: Tsubuteiwa Stone (礫岩石)
• Age: Edo period
