Ogata, Antique Japanese Milling Stone Support - This beautiful antique stone was once part of a traditional Japanese milling installation that was used to grind grain and rice. The function of this specific stone was to support a massive lever system that was connected to a milling stone. The shape is very recognizable, which was also the origin of the name. Ōgata (凹型) means concave-shaped in Japanese. In the first character you can even easily recognize the shape of the stone.
This kind of antique stone is often given new life in the Japanese garden. They are usually placed partly underground with the two protruding parts facing up. Reusing materials like this is a common phenomenon in the Japanese garden and perfectly captures the philosophical concept of Wabi-Sabi.
