These so-called Ishidōhyō (石道標) are slightly placed in the ground and feature carved text from top to bottom. These texts can refer to various topics. It can for example tell directions or be a description of a location. Next to this, the posts often feature a more poetic text.
This very special round Ishidōhyō from Wakayama prefecture features beautiful carved Japanese text that provided directions to travelers. The text on one side reads: Migi Ise Jingu (右 伊勢神宮), which translates to: To the right - Ise Shrine. This is a famous shrine dedicated to the Japanese goddess of the sun Amaterasu in the city of Ise, Mie prefecture. The other side reads Hidari Nachi no Taki (左 なちのたき), which translates to: To the left - Nachi waterfall. The Nachi waterfall, also known as Nachi falls, is an incredibly famous waterfall located next to the Kumano Nachi Taisha shrine in Nachikatsuura, Wakayama Prefecture. It is the tallest singe-drop waterfall in all of Japan and a significant part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
