Kyoto Enseki, Antique Japanese Curbstone
Item description - YO20010010
Granite curbstones have been applied in the Japanese public space and architecture for centuries. A primary example being the old streets and gardens of Kyoto, where they are positioned to accentuate sides and edges. Curbstones like this are known as Enseki (縁石) in Japanese, which translates to edge stone.
This curbstone can beautifully be applied as a Kutsunugi-ishi, connecting the veranda with the garden in a authentic way. Repurposing stones like this and giving it a second life is a common tradition in the Japanese garden and perfectly captures the feeling of Wabi-Sabi.
• Origin: Kyoto, Kyoto prefecture
• Material: Hirukawa stone (蛭川石)
• Age: Meiji Period
