Kukai Ishibumi, Japanese Carved Memorial Stone - Memorial stones with carved text known as Ishibumi (碑) can be found all over Japan. The texts have a range of topics, for example the location that the stone is a part of. The primary function of Ishibumi is to transfer knowledge to future generations.
This particular Ishibumi features beautiful carved Japanese text referring to ancient pilgrimage traditions. The central characters are Dōgyō Ninin (同行二人), which translates to: Two people traveling together. The two characters in the bottom left are read as Kūkai (空海), which is the famous monk, also known as Kōbō Daishi, who created Shingon Buddhism. In the context of pilgrimage, it has a deeper meaning: the pilgrim and Kōbō Daishi travel together. Even when a pilgrim walks alone, Kōbō Daishi is spiritually regarded as accompanying them. It is one of the best-known expressions associated with the Shikoku Henro pilgrimage.
The thinner hiragana characters on the right read: Namu amida butsu (なむあみだぶつ). This is a very famous phrase in Buddhism which means: I take refuge in Amida Buddha.
