Kannon Carved Stone, Japanese Buddha Statue - Along paths in Japan you can often find Dōsojin (道祖神) which are statues of friendly deities that protect travelers on their trip and serve to define paths and boundaries. Dōsojin come in many different forms such as carved stones, individual statues and other ornaments. They are often depicted as a human couple, which is also a symbol of marriage and fertility.
Very similar to Dōsojin statues, there are Kannon statues that can be found all across Japan. These statues do not depict a human couple, but rather Kannon who is the Buddhist deity of compassion. During the Edo period, these statues served as milestones for travelers and gave them to opportunity to worship.
