Kaidori Tsuridoro, Japanese Antique Metal Lantern - In Japan, metal lanterns are seen as sacred light sources. A common used way to ward off evil spirits and entities. That is why they can be spotted at temples and shrines all over the country, as well as at peoples homes and in gardens.
Most Japanese metal lanterns can be placed on the floor or on a cabinet, but it is more usual to hang them from a chain. This is where the name Tsuridōrō (釣り灯籠) comes from, which roughly translates to hanging lantern. There are multiple methods to fix the light inside the lantern. Think of a candle or oil lamp, but electricity is also a widely used option. The light shining from inside the lantern, and silhouettes it casts, results in a wonderful warm ambiance.
This particular Tsuridōrō is fairly antique and in very good condition. The lantern was made during the Japanese Meiji period and a birdcage was highly likely used as a basemodel. The classification Kaidori (飼い鳥), meaning domestic bird in Japanese, is given to this Tsuridōrō model. Its unique shape and intriguing carvings make it a special authentic lantern.
