Izutsu, Japanese Stone Well Enclosure
Item description - YO07010014
Many Japanese gardens feature traditional wells built over natural water sources or hand-dug well shafts. The walls inside the wells were made waterproof with clay and reinforced with wooden panels. Water from the wells was used as drinking water as well as for watering the plants and greenery.
Granite wells with a characteristic square shape are known as Izutsu (井筒). The separate pieces of granite are put together in a firm way creating a very authentic traditional well. On top of the Izutsu most of the time a bamboo lid was placed to protect the well from dirt and debris the wind might blow into it.
