Isho Tansu Cabinet, Antique Japanese Furniture
Item description - YO25010008
Isho Tansu Cabinet, Antique Japanese Furniture - Japan has a rich history of artisanal woodworking and furniture making. Traditional mobile cabinets are a fantastic example of this. These cabinets are known as Tansu (箪笥) in Japan, and were primarily used for storing clothes and accessories. Tansu could frequently be found in the homes of the Japanese higher class during the Edo period, but during the following Meiji period they would become much more frequent in all shapes and sizes. This gaining popularity can be attributed to the craftsmanship that Tansu show, the organized storage space they offer, and the fact that they are easily moveable due to their relatively light weight.
This kind of Tansu is known as Ishō Tansu (衣装箪笥), and was frequently used to efficiently store clothing. This is also where the name Ishō comes from, as this is the Japanese word for clothing.
This specific Tansu cabinet comes in two parts that have to be placed on top of each other. They can be separated by loosening the handles, after which it can be transported more easily. The cabinet features six drawers and four locks, and is richly decorated with symbolic ironwork. The style of this Tansu originates from Sado Island off the coast of Niigata prefecture, and is known for the dark colors of both the wood and metal. In Japan, the style is known as the Sado-ga-shima Tansu (佐渡島箪笥)
