Item description - YO07010204
Irasshaimase Ishidohyo, Japanese Stone Signpost - Decorative stone posts can be seen all over Japan. These so-called Ishidōhyō (石道標) are slightly placed in the ground and feature carved text from top to bottom. These texts can refer to various topics. It can for example tell directions or be a description of a location. Next to this, the posts often feature a more poetic text.
Everyone who ever visited Japan is familiar with the carved text on this Ishidōhyō, which reads Irasshaimase (いらっしゃいませ). This phrase is always said when welcoming someone to a store or restaurant for example. It roughly translates to: I humbly ask you to exist (in my presence). Nevertheless it can culturally better be translated as: Welcome!.
