But also, in regular houses, in the garden or even indoors, authentic metal lanterns bring a one-of-a-kind soothing atmosphere. Because of this the name in Japanese is Tsuridōrō (釣り灯籠), which roughly translates to hanging lantern. This specific bronze Tsuridōrō originated from the Dazaifu Tenman-gū (太宰府天満宮) Shinto Shrine dedicated to the god Tenjin in Dazaifu, Fukuoka prefecture. The text on the wooden chest refers to this shrine and also tells that the lantaarn was made in celebration of a festival that the Shrine has organised since 1715. On the lantern you can see the symbol known as Ume no Hana (梅の花), which is Japanese for the flower of the plum tree. The Dazaifu Tenman-gū Shrine is famous for its plum trees.
