Urashima Tarō Tortoise Statue, Japanese Antique Including Wooden Chest - 0701-0061
Item description
A beautiful antique stone turtle from Japan. It forms a one-of-a-kind addition to both an inside and outside environment. The turtle includes a wooden chest that is antique in and of itself. The chest can be used to store the turtle in.
The stone turtle was based on the turtle of the Japanese legend of Urashima Tarō (浦島 太郎). This legend tells the story of a fisher named Urashima Tarō who saved a turtle from a groep of pestering children. The turtle turned out to have magical powers and carried the fisher on its back to the Dragon Palace (竜宮城) where he meets the princess Otohime (乙姫). Together they have a wonderful couple of days enjoying each others company before Urashima Tarō decides to head back home. When he returned he realized that he did not spent a couple of days at the Dragon Palace, but instead a hundred years. This is when he decides to open a mysterious box he got from Otohime. After opening the box, the young fisher turned into a very old man.
