Tora-zō, Japanese Antique Tiger Statue - 0701-0101
Tora-zō (トラ像) are traditional Japanese tiger statues. These statues are often used to ward of evil spirits from holy grounds, like for example at the Kurama-dera temple in Kyoto. The tiger has a strong cultural and philosophical background in Japan and plays a significant role in many stories and legends.
This Tora-zō statue is made of Taikō stone (太閤石), a material that can be quite grainy. This is the reason why it lost many details over the years, which perfectly captures the feeling of Wabi-Sabi.
• Origin: Nagoya, Aichi prefecture
