Pagoda buildings, Tō (塔) in Japanese, originated in ancient India from where the phenomenon spread throughout different parts of Asia. Today the Pagoda is synonymous with traditional Chinese architecture and it also became a staple of the Japanese culture as well. The high Pagodas symbolize the sacred mountains of legends and folklore. The top floor of a Pagoda was usually the place where valuable treasures, jewels and artifacts were safely stored.
Centuries ago the Pagodas architecture served as a blueprint for the creation of stone garden ornaments in Japan. The stone Pagodas, known as Sekitō (石塔) in Japanese, were a perfect addition to the traditional Japanese garden because of the symbolism and their unique presence. A stone Pagoda can add a one-of-a-kind essence to a Japanese garden like no other garden ornament can.
This particular Pagoda has seven tiers, which is a well-known lucky number in Japan. Pagodas featuring seven tiers are known as Nanajunotō (七重塔).
Because of old age this specific Pagoda has a wonderful patina and a withered appearance. This perfectly fits the Japanese philosophical concept of Wabi-Sabi (侘寂).
