Item description
Komainu, also called Lion Dogs, Foo Dogs or Shishi Dogs are statue pairs of lion-like creatures either guarding the entrance or the inner shrine of Japanese Shinto shrines or kept inside the inner shrine itself, where they are not visible to the public. Komainu can sometimes also be found at Buddhist temples. The first type, born during the Edo period, is called Sando Komainu. Komainu has an open mouth and is placed on the right. Shishi has a closed mouth and is placed on the left facing the shrine.

The statues are in museum quality but show some small cracks and aging. We recommend protecting the statues from moist and frost by keeping them inside. The Komainu are for sale per statue but it is advised to keep this wonderful set together.
