Japanese Antique Metal Lantern, Maru Yukimi
The Yukimi lantern is without a doubt the most popular Japanese lantern that is relatively close to the ground. Yukimi (雪見) is Japanese for seeing snow. The name is based on the fact that the Kasa (傘) or umbrella of the lantern is covered with snow during the cold Winter days. This is easier to see compared to most other lanterns as the Yukimi is closer to the ground. This is why the Yukimi lantern is also known as the snow lantern.
This antique metal Yukimi lantern is known as Maru Yukimi (丸雪見), which translates to round Yukimi. This refers to the round shape of the Kasa (傘). The lantern has a very durable appearance with inseparable parts. On the inside Washi paper can be seen which allows for softer light to shine from the lantern.
